Renaming an image in Docker

Author:JIYIK Last Updated:2025/03/25 Views:

In Docker, we can use an easy way to rename an image without rebuilding it from scratch. This article will discuss how to rename an image using Docker.

Renaming an image in Docker

We can rename an image or change the repository name by changing the image tag. We remember that a tag is just a human-readable alias for the full image name.

$ docker image tag server:latest sample/server:latest

or

$ docker image tag d583c3ac35fd sample/server:latest

As a shorthand method, we can run the following code snippet:

$ docker tag d58 sample/server:latest

Parameter d58 represents the first three characters of the image ID. In this case, we only need these characters.

Remove old images as a best practice

Finally, we can delete the old image, leaving as many tags as possible associated with the same image. If we don't like the old image name, we can delete it after re-tagging:

$ docker rmi server

This command will remove the alias/tag tag format. However, since d58... has other names, Docker will not remove the actual image.
