Updating existing images with Docker Compose

Author:JIYIK Last Updated:2025/03/25 Views:

Docker containers are designed to be disposable and easily replaceable. Therefore, whenever the base image of a container receives an update, we should pull the updated image and start a new instance of the container.

This article will discuss how to update an existing image using docker-compose.

Updating existing images with Docker Compose

Make sure all photos are downloaded before updating the container with a new image to minimize the time spent in an intermediate state or in an intermediate state in case the image download fails.

  1. Use the following code snippet to update the latest image.
    $ docker-compose pull

  2. Restart the container using the following command. The above snippet will only recreate the containers that have changed. We can also append --force-recreate to this command; however, this will only recreate the containers that have not changed.
    $ docker-compose up -d --remove-orphans

  3. As an optional step, remove any outdated images.
    $ docker image prune

    For the last step, we do not need to use the -f or --force-recreate parameter as this could have destructive side effects on our image.
