Updating existing images with Docker Compose
Docker containers are designed to be disposable and easily replaceable. Therefore, whenever the base image of a container receives an update, we should pull the updated image and start a new instance of the container.
This article will discuss how to update an existing image using docker-compose.
Updating existing images with Docker Compose
Make sure all photos are downloaded before updating the container with a new image to minimize the time spent in an intermediate state or in an intermediate state in case the image download fails.
-
Use the following code snippet to update the latest image.
$ docker-compose pull
-
Restart the container using the following command. The above snippet will only recreate the containers that have changed. We can also append --force-recreate to this command; however, this will only recreate the containers that have not changed.
$ docker-compose up -d --remove-orphans
-
As an optional step, remove any outdated images.
For the last step, we do not need to use the -f or --force-recreate parameter as this could have destructive side effects on our image.$ docker image prune
