Focus input when clicking another element in React

Focusing an input when clicking another element in React:

  1. Set the ref attribute on the input element.
  2. Sets a property on another element onClick.
  3. Focus the input when clicking on other element, eg ref.current.focus().
import {useRef} from 'react';

const App = () => {
  const ref = useRef(null);

  const handleClick = () => {
    ref.current.focus();
  };

  return (
    <div>
      <input ref={ref} id="message" name="message" />

      <hr />

      <button onClick={handleClick}>Focus input</button>
    </div>
  );
};

export default App;

Focus input when clicking another element in React

We use useRefthe hook to create a ref object that gives us access to the input element.

useRef()The hook can be passed an initial value as an argument. The hook returns a mutable ref object whose .currentattributes are initialized to the passed argument.

请注意, we have to access the current property of the ref object in order to access the input element on which we set the ref attribute.

When we pass a ref prop to an element, for example <input ref={myRef} />, React sets the properties of the ref object .currentto the corresponding DOM node.

We set onClickthe property on the button element, so every time the button is clicked, handleClickthe function will be called.

请注意, this doesn't have to be a button, we can set the property on a div or any other element onClick.

We use focus()the method to focus handleClickthe input field in the function.

The ref property on currentthe input element gives us access to the input element, so calling focus ref.current.focus()can set the focus on the input.
