Installation and use of screen command on Linux system

Author:JIYIK Last Updated:2025/04/07 Views:

Screen is a software used for switching between command line terminals. Let's take an example to illustrate the function of screen.

For example: When remotely connecting to a server, a terminal is opened using ssh. I need to execute a long task. During this period, if ssh is disconnected (for unknown reasons) and the terminal is closed, my task will be terminated if no measures are taken. Therefore, based on this situation, you can use the screen command to open a virtual window before executing this long task, and then run my task. During the execution of this task, it doesn’t matter if the terminal ssh is disconnected, because my task is still running in the virtual window (actually it is executed in the background). While running a long task in the virtual window, you can exit the virtual window. At this time, the task will not stop and is already running in the background.

Directions:

Install the software

$ yum install screen

Use the following command to open a virtual window

$ screen

Check which virtual windows are running

$ screen -ls  // 查看当前有哪些虚拟窗口在运行
    14544.pts-2.localhost    (Detached)
1 Socket in /var/run/screen/S-root.

The number (14544) is the ID of the running virtual window. You can use this ID to call up the corresponding virtual window again.

$ screen -r  虚拟窗口的ID    // 调出相应的虚拟窗口
