React: How to upload multiple files using Axios

Author:JIYIK Last Updated:2025/03/16 Views:

This concise article shows you how to upload multiple files in React with the help of Axios. It's not a huge job and can be done in a few simple steps (you'll see Javascript and TypeScript code snippets in step 3):

  1. Run the following command to install axios:
npm i axios
  1. Implement a form with the enctype attribute set to multipart/form-data, and then add a multi-file input element, like this:
<form onSubmit={handleFormSubmit} encType='multipart/form-data'>
    <input type='file' name='file' multiple />
    <button type='submit'>Submit</button>
</form>
  1. Create a handler function that will be called when the form is submitted:
const handleFormSubmit = async (e) => {
    // prevent the page from reloading
    e.preventDefault();

    // construct form data
    const formData = new FormData(e.currentTarget);
    const files = e.currentTarget.files;
    for (let i = 0; i < files.length; i++) {
      formData.append('files', files[i]);
    }

    // make a POST request with Axios
    const res = await axios.post('/api/upload', formData, {
      headers: {
        'Content-Type': 'multipart/form-data',
      },
    });

    console.log(res);
};

If we were to write this in TypeScript, the handler function would look like this:

const handleFormSubmit = async (e: React.FormEvent<HTMLFormElement>) => {
    // prevent the page from reloading
    e.preventDefault();

    // construct form data
    const formData = new FormData(e.currentTarget);
    const files = e.currentTarget.files;
    for (let i = 0; i < files.length; i++) {
      formData.append('files', files[i]);
    }

    // make a POST request with Axios
    const res = await axios.post('/api/upload', formData, {
      headers: {
        'Content-Type': 'multipart/form-data',
      },
    });

    console.log(res);
};

When using React, we must have come across control components and event handlers. We need to use `.bind()` in the constructor of the custom component to bind these methods to the component instance. As shown in the following code:
