Cross out (strikethrough) text on click in React

Author:JIYIK Last Updated:2025/03/16 Views:

To cross out text on click in React:

  1. Sets the attribute on the element onClick.
  2. When an element is clicked, check text-decorationif its property has been set.
  3. If the property is set, it is removed, otherwise it is set line-through.
const App = () => {
  const handleClick = event => {
    if (event.target.style.textDecoration) {
      event.target.style.removeProperty('text-decoration');
    } else {
      event.target.style.setProperty('text-decoration', 'line-through');
    }
  };

  return (
    <div>
      <p onClick={handleClick}>Walk the dog</p>

      <br />

      <p onClick={handleClick}>Buy groceries</p>
    </div>
  );
};

export default App;

react strikethrough on click

We set onClick on the paragraph elements, so every time they are clicked, the handleClick function will be called.

The target property on the event object refers to the specific paragraph tag that was clicked.

We first check to see if the property is set in the element's style object textDecoration.

If the attribute is set, we removePropertyremove it using the method. If textDecorationthe attribute is not set, we setProperty()cross out the text using the method.

This has the effect of toggling the strikethrough style on the paragraph mark.

We can set the property on as many elements as we want onClickand use the same handleClickfunction, since it uses the event object to get a reference to the element that was clicked.
