Restoring a MySQL database from a backup file

There are many reasons why we would want to restore a database from a backup file... but we should also test it on a test server to make sure our database backup is working properly. The syntax is as follows:

mysql -h hostname -u username -pthepassword databasename < dumpfile.sql

Here is an example:

mysql -h localhost -u root -p72aDufi8 db01 < thedumpfile.sq
