Calling REST API in Node.js
REST is short for Representational State Transfer . A REST API or RESTful API is an API or Web API (Application Programming Interface) that conforms to the constraints/restrictions of the REST architectural style and allows interaction with RESTful web services.
In this article, we will learn how to use Node.js to make requests using third-party packages.
Calling REST API in Node.js
The HTTP GET method retrieves resources from a server. For example, when a browser retrieves TODO
a list of data from a server or obtains specific TODO
requested information, it uses the HTTP GET request method.
GET and HEAD requests do not change the state of the server.
GET
The API is idempotent, meaning that making multiple identical requests will always produce the same result every time, until another API (such as POST or PUT) is sent to the server, which changes the state of the resource on the server.
Axios is a free third-party package, a Promise-based HTTP client for browsers and Node.js. It is available on NPM.
We can use Axios to send asynchronous HTTP requests to REST endpoints. It becomes easy to perform CRUD operations using Axios.
We can use it in Vanilla JavaScript or in libraries like Node.js or Angular.
Install the Axios library using the following command
$ npm i axios。
GET requests are get
made using the method.
const axios = require('axios');
async function getData() {
const res = await axios.get('https://jsonplaceholder.test.com/todos/1');
const data = res.data;
console.log(data);
}
getData();
In the above example, once the user runs the file, a GET call is sent to the node server (fictitious in this article) with the specified URL. If the server processes the data without interruption, it returns a success message.
Depending on the output of the server response, we can print a message on the console or notify the user with an appropriate message.
The output is as follows:
{ userId: 1, id: 1, title: 'delectus aut autem', completed: false }
