ShellJS is a portable implementation of Unix shell commands on top of the Node.js API. We can use it to remove the shell script's dependency on Unix while keeping the commands familiar and powerful.

exec(command [, options] [, callback])

Following are the different options of Node.js child_process.exec().

  • async : async means asynchronous execution. Regardless of the value passed, if a callback is provided, it will be set to true . The default value is false.
  • silent : Do not write program output to the console. Default value is false.
  • encoding : The character encoding to use. It affects the values ​​returned to stdout and stderr and what is written to stdout and stderr in non-silent mode. The default value is utf8.

We will focus on how to execute shell scripts in Node.js using the shelljs module.

First, install the shelljs library using the following command.

$ npm i shelljs

The following command will check the version of npm.

const shell = require('shelljs')
shell.exec("npm --version")
