Linux statistics command wc
The wc command is a commonly used command in Linux system, and it is also a member of the pipeline command family. wc is a statistical command, which is very simple to use and does not have as many options as sort. Let's take a look at the wc command.
# wc [options]…[FILE]…
Without any options, wc will count three things: the number of lines in the file, the number of words printed (words are delimited by tabs or spaces), and the number of bytes.
# cat /tmp/wc.txt
onmpw jiyi web site
jiyi onmpw web site
www onmpw com
jy onmpw com
# wc /tmp/wc.txt
4 14 67 /tmp/wc.txt
We can see that /tmp/wc.txt has 4 lines of data, 14 words, and 67 bytes. Students who are not confident in the wc command can count them by themselves to verify that the amount of data is not large and it is easy to count them clearly.
-c specifies this option to count only the number of bytes
# wc –c /tmp/wc.txt
67 /tmp/wc.txt
67, yes, the same as using only wc statistics.
-l specifies this option to count only the number of lines
# wc –l /tmp/wc.txt
4 /tmp/wc.txt //The result is still the same
-w specifies this option to count only the number of words
# wc –w /tmp/wc.txt
14 /tmp/wc.txt
-m specifies the option to count the number of characters
# wc -m /tmp/wc.txt
67 /tmp/wc.txt
We can see that the number of bytes counted by -c is equal. That's right, because our file content is all characters, and one character occupies one byte, so the two are equal. If the file content contains Chinese, then the two will not be so lucky to be equal.
-L counts the length of the row with the largest length
# wc –L /tmp/wc.txt
19 /tmp/wc.txt
We can count the length of the longest line of data in /tmp/wc.txt ourselves, which is 19.
The wc command has only a few options and is very easy to use. I hope this article will be helpful to you.
