Linux data stream bidirectional redirection command tee

Author:JIYIK Last Updated:2025/04/08 Views:

The tee command is a member of the Linux pipe command family. Its function is to redirect data to a file. We know that data redirection can be done directly using >. Yes, > can redirect data streams. But it cannot redirect data to standard output. The tee command can redirect data streams to a file and also output data to the screen from standard output.

# cat /etc/passwd > /tee.txt
//This area on the screen is blank
# cat /etc/passwd | tee /tee.txt
root:x:0:0:root:/root:/bin/bash
bin:x:1:1:bin:/bin:/sbin/nologin
daemon:x:2:2:daemon:/sbin:/sbin/nologin
adm:x:3:4:adm:/var/adm:/sbin/nologin
lp:x:4:7:lp:/var/spool/lpd:/sbin/nologin
sync:x:5:0:sync:/sbin:/bin/sync
……

See, this is the power of the tee command. In fact, it means tee == > + standard output.
The tee command has only one common option, which is -a (append). Using -a means appending the data stream to the end of the file instead of overwriting the file. Seeing -a reminds us of the symbol >>. Compared with >, >> also appends the data stream to the end of the file. So the formula for tee and >> is tee == >> + standard output.

# cat /etc/passwd | tee –a /tee.txt

That’s all we have to say about the tee command. I hope this article will be helpful to you.
