Linux connection command paste

Author:JIYIK Last Updated:2025/04/08 Views:

The paste command is a member of the Linux pipe command family. This command merges each file column by column and outputs it.

Before formally introducing paste, let's prepare two files /tmp/paste1 and /tmp/paste2.

# cat /tmp/paste1
onmpw
jiyi
blog
# cat /tmp/paste2
com
cn
net

Let's take a look at the usage of paste:

# paste [options]… [file]…

You can follow multiple files after paste, and it will read the contents of each file and merge them column by column. By default, each column is separated by the tab key.

# paste /tmp/paste1 /tmp/paste2
onmpw com
jiyi cn
blog net

Note: This is the tab key, not the space character.

Of course, paste uses the tab key as the default separator, but we can also specify the separator. Here we need to use the option -d

-d specifies the delimiter between each column

# paste –d '.' /tmp/paste1 /tmp/paste2
onmpw.com
jiyi.cn
blog.net

Very simple, right? Also, by default, the paste command uses the first file as the first column, the second file as the second column, and so on, with a separator in the middle. Then we can also change its display mode to horizontal display. What does it mean? It means that we connect the contents of each line of the first file with a separator as the first line, and the contents of each line of the second file with a separator as the second line... This is where option -s comes in.

-s changes the vertical connection to a horizontal connection display

# paste –sd ':' /tmp/paste1 /tmp/paste2
onmpw:jiyi:blog
com:cn:net

The paste command mainly has these two options, which is very simple. I hope this article is helpful to you.
