Detailed introduction to installing Gradle on Windows

Author:JIYIK Last Updated:2025/04/07 Views:

Gradle is a Java-based tool, so it requires Java 8 or higher to be running on your machine. Before installing Gradle, make sure you have Java SDK 8 or higher installed. It runs on all major operating systems.

We don't need to install groovy because Gradle has its own groovy library.

To verify the Java installation, run the Java -version command:

Windows Check Java version

Visit the official Gradle download page . As of writing this article, the latest version is v7.5.1 . We download this version.

After the download is complete, unzip the zip file to the location where we want to install it, and copy the path from here to set up the environment. As shown in the figure below:

Gradle windows decompression location

Next we will introduce the setting of environment variables. First open the control panel

Gradle windows open the control panel

Then select Advanced system settings

Gradle windows advanced system settings

In the Advanced System Settings panel that opens, click Environment Variables

Gradle windows click environment variables

Then in the opened Environment Variables panel, click New

Gradle windows user variables new

Then create a new GRADLE_HOMEvariable with the value of the path where gradle is unzipped

Gradle windows creates a new user variable GRADLE_HOME

After confirmation, a new variable is created successfully.

Gradle Windows GRADLE_HOME environment variable

Then modify the Path variable in the system variables. Add the directory where the gradle command is located at the end ( C:\Java\gradle-7.5.1\bin)

Gradle windows system variable Path add Gradle execution directory

After the modification is completed, save it. Then open the terminal to verify whether our gradle installation is successful.

Gradle windows installation successful verification

The gradle command will highlight the latest released version and start a daemon to configure Gradle and the system.

To check the version of Gradle, run gradle -versionthe command. It will show the versions of Gradle, Kotlin, Groovy, Ant, JVM, and OS.

Gradle View version details

At this point our gradle installation should be complete. I hope your installation goes smoothly! !
