Move Multiple Files in Linux Bash

Author:JIYIK Last Updated:2025/04/06 Views:

In this article, we will explain how to move multiple files to the same directory in Linux. We will explain different methods such as typing multiple file names, using wildcard characters ( *) to represent similar file names and/or identical file extensions.

The example files and directories we will use throughout this article are as follows.

File and Directory Structure

You can use the following command to create this structure.

mkdir Folder1
cd Folder1
touch file1.txt
touch file2.txt
touch file3.txt
touch file1.pdf
touch file2.pdf
touch file3.pdf
mkdir Folder2

After mvthe command, enter the name of the file to be moved, followed by the directory name. Using a slash ( ) after the directory name /is optional.

mv file1.txt file1.pdf file2.txt Folder2/

Move using file name

The asterisk ( *) is called 通配符and it takes every file that begins with the specified name as mvan argument to the command.

Suppose we want to move file1all files with the name , even if the extension is different. We use a wildcard instead of specifying the extension at the end of the file name.

mv file1.* Folder2/

Similar to wildcards in file names

This time, we want to move all files with the same extension, even if they have different names. We use a wildcard instead of the file name and then write the extension we want at the end.

mv *.pdf Folder2/

Wildcards for the same extension
