Obtaining an IPv4 Address on Unix and Linux
IP stands for Internet Protocol, which specifies the principles of Internet communications. An Internet Protocol (IP) address is a unique identifier for each device on the Internet, allowing data to be transferred between connected devices.
IP addresses IANA
are assigned by a standards body called the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority. There are different versions of IP addresses, but IPv4 (Internet Protocol version 4) is the most commonly used for Internet transmissions.
IPv4 (Internet Protocol version 4)
IPv4
It is a 32-bit unique address consisting of a network part and a host part. The network part is uniquely assigned to a network, while the host part is assigned to each host in the network.
IPv4 addresses can be private or public. Private addresses are used only on local networks and cannot transmit data over the Internet.
IANA has released three private IP address ranges, as shown below.
10.0.0.0-10.255.255.255 \\
172.16.0.0-172.31.255.255 \\
192.168.0.0-192.168.255.255
A public IP address is also a global address used to communicate with devices (hosts, web, VPN, etc.) over the Internet.
There are two easy ways to get an IP address in Linux: Linux wizard and terminal.
Obtaining an IPv4 Address on Unix and Linux Using the Linux Wizard
In the Linux Wizard, go to 设置
, click 网络
, and then click the icon 有线
in Options 设置
.
Click the icon Wired
in Options setting
.
A new Linux wizard will appear and you can check the link speed, IPv4 address, IPv6 address, hardware address, default route, and DNS.
Obtaining an IPv4 Address Using Terminal on Unix and Linux
There are also many commands that
can obtain the IP address in the terminal, such as ip address
,,, hostname -I
.network manager
The command hostname -I
will just give you the IP address on your terminal.
The command ip address
will give you a brief description of the IP address.
The command nmcli -p device show
will provide you with a detailed description of the network, such as IPv4 地址
, IPv4 网关
, 连接类型
(wired/wireless), 网络类型
, MTU
(maximum transmission unit), and 硬件地址
.
