Author:JIYIK Last Updated:2025/04/05 Views:

To create a new directory in Linux, we can use the file manager or the terminal. To create a new directory using the terminal, we use mkdirthe command.

mkdirOrder

mkdirCommands create directories and set permissions on directories using the command line interface.

grammar

mkdir [OPTION] [DIRECTORY]

Here, OPTIONthe options for creating directories are included, DIRECTORYrepresenting one or more directory names to be created.

When running this command, we must make sure that we have sufficient permissions, otherwise, we may get an permission deniederror.

mkdirCreate a new directory using the command

mkdir newdir

It creates a new directory named in the current working directory newdir.

To verify the creation of the directory, we can use ls -lthe command.

ls -l

Output:

drwxr-xr-x 2 zeppy zeppy 4096 Sep 1 20:00 newdir

To create a directory somewhere else instead of the current working directory, we need to provide the absolute or relative path of the parent directory.

mkdir test/abc

This will testcreate a new directory within the directory abc. Here, testthe directory must be within the current working directory.

However, if the parent directory testdoes not exist, we will get an error. We can use the option to create the parent directory No such file or directoryif it does not exist .-p

mkdir -p test/abc/newdir

In this case, even if either parent directory testand abcdoes not exist, the command will newdircreate the missing directory outside the directory.

Setting permissions when creating a directory

To set permissions when creating a directory, we use -mthe -p option. The syntax for setting permissions chmodis the same as the -p command.

mkdir -m 700 test

This will create a testnew directory called with permissions 700, which means that only the creator of the directory can access the directory.

Creating Multiple Directories

To create multiple directories, we use mkdirthe command followed by the names of the directories to be created separated by spaces.

mkdir tennis football swimmimg

tennisThis will create the , , footballand directories in the current working directory swimming.
