Configure Git credentials to invoke password and username
This article outlines the process of configuring Git to call the git pull and git push commands with your password and username. If you use HTTP(S) authentication, Git will always prompt you for your password when pushing or pulling.
Configure Git to store your password
The easiest way to deal with Git asking for passwords when pushing and pulling is to use SSH authentication instead of HTTPS. You just need to update your remote URL on the command line as shown below.
Order:
$ git remote set-url origin git@github.com:username/repo.git
There is one problem with this approach. It will expose your username and password in many places.
Use credential.helper to store your password
You can use Git's Credential Helper to store your passwords.
Order:
$ git config --global credential.helper store
The command above will store your credentials in a plain text file which is not completely secure. You can fix this by setting a timeout using the following command.
Order:
$ git config --global credential.helper 'cache --timeout=3600'
This command will store your password for one hour.
Use the credential.helper manager to store your passwords
Alternatively, you can use Windows Credential Manager to store your passwords in your system's secure storage.
Order:
$ git config --global credential.helper manager
Summarize
In short, using HTTPS authentication requires you to provide Git with a password when pushing or pulling. You can configure Git to remember the details, but it's not always advisable to store your credentials on your computer.
