Discarding changes in Git
No matter how proficient you are in programming, there is no guarantee that your code will work correctly on the first try. Fortunately, Git has options that allow us to discard or undo any changes in the code repository that are no longer required. It provides a safety net for our work.
This article will discuss various ways to discard Git changes in a branch. Local changes in Git are interpreted as changes that have not yet been pushed to the local or remote repository.
Discard changes to a file in Git
For example, you want to discard some changes in a particular file, then the commands that will satisfy this scenario (discard such changes) are mentioned below.
git restore somefile.html
This will discard all the uncommitted changes in our required files. But the main point is that we should be careful with these changes because once we discard them, we can't get them back at any cost anyway.
Discard all local changes in Git
Git provides us with many options, one option has been mentioned above and another one we explain here.
Sometimes we want to discard all the current changes that we have made in the code; for this, we git restore
use parameters in the command .
instead of mentioning the file path in the command.
$ git restore.
Most of the time we have untracked files in our working copy and we don't want those files, so git clean
the command will work here.
$ git clean -f
Once again, we will discuss this important point: after executing this command, we cannot revert these changes.
Saving changes on the Stash in Git
Most of the time, we are not sure whether we want or not local changes. In this case, we will not discard them. Instead, we will stash
save them temporarily using , as described below.
$ git stash --include-untracked
This will give us a clean working copy with all the changes saved in Git's Stash so that we can restore them from there later if needed.
$ git stash pop
Here, the options pop
will commit the last saved state and stash
discard and clear it from .
