Inserting multiple rows in MySQL
INSERT adds new rows to an existing table. Use INSERT...VALUESthe command to add rows based on explicitly provided values.
INSERT privilege on a table is required to insert data into it.
grammar:
INSERT INTO table_name (column_list)
VALUES
(value_list_1),
(value_list_2),
...
(value_list_n);
In the above syntax, table_name represents the name of the table into which data is to be inserted. Next, after the table name, a list of columns is given, separated by commas.
Third, include a comma-delimited VALUESlist of row data in the clause. The items in the list are each row in the data.
Each element must have the same number of values as columns in the columns list.
In theory, a single INSERT command can insert any number of rows. However, if the MySQL server receives an INSERT statement whose size exceeds the maximum allowed packet, it gives a packet too large error and disconnects the connection.
You can change the value of the max_allowed_packet variable with the following line:
SET GLOBAL max_allowed_packet=size;
To further understand the previous concepts, consider the following example:
INSERT INTO Employees (first_name, last_name)
VALUES
('John', 'Doe'),
('Will', 'Smith');
In the above code, we insert two Employees records in Employees table as first_name and last_name separated by ,.
