Writing error log files in PHP
When we have a large web application running in production mode, we need to monitor all errors or potential errors that our users may face. The best way to keep an eye on all possible errors is to log them to a file as they occur.
This article will introduce the built-in functions error_log()
and writing error logs to files in PHP.
Writing error log files in PHP
PHP has a built-in function error_log()
that sends an error message to the defined error handling. We can easily log errors and warnings to the PHP script file and php.ini
change the configuration from the PHP.
error_log()
The function accepts 3 parameters.
The first parameter is the error we want to save to the file, and the second is the error message type. We usually use 3
as the message type to save error messages to a file.
The third parameter is the file location where we want to save the error log.
So, let's look at an example. We'll create an error and error_log()
save it to a file using the function.
# php
$error = "A new error is occured";
$path = "application-errors.log";
error_log($error, 3, $path);
Output:
From the above example, the error has been saved to the file. By using in each function error_log()
, we can log the error in the file and ensure that the code runs perfectly.
Additionally, we can send the time of the error to determine when a specific error occurred.
