Git list remote branches

Author:JIYIK Last Updated:2025/04/20 Views:

This article will show you how to list remote repositories from your local branch.

A remote repository is a project hosted on a server, such as Github/Gitlab.

git remoteAllows us to use short names (aliases) to execute commands instead of typing the entire remote URL.

$ git fetch git@github.com:stwarts/git-demo.git
From github.com:stwarts/git-demo
 * branch            HEAD       -> FETCH_HEAD

To git remote -vlist detailed information about all remotes, displaying only the names, use git remote.

-vOption stands for --verbose, it displays the corresponding URL for each name.

$ git remote
origin
$ git remote -v
origin git@github.com:stwarts/git-demo.git (fetch)
origin git@github.com:stwarts/git-demo.git (push)
