Check out the upstream tracking Git branch

Author:JIYIK Last Updated:2025/04/04 Views:

This article explains how we can see which local branch tracks which remote/upstream branch in a git repository, and how to set up local branches or track remote branches.

Check out the upstream tracking Git branch

We can run the command below to see which local branch is tracking which remote branch.

$ git branch -vv

Double -vv should show all the branches in our local repository and their corresponding remote-tracking branches.

Output:

Displays all branches in our local repository and their corresponding remote tracking branches

Newer versions of Git will display remote tracking branches in blue. From the image above we can see:

  1. Branch Dev2.1 is tracking branch Dev2.1 in the upstream source.
  2. The branch Sample_Branch is tracking the Sample_Branch branch in the upstream source.
  3. The Dev_Branch, Main-Branch, main, and Master branches have no remote tracking branches.

Suppose we want to set up a remote tracking branch for the Master branch in one of our upstreams above. We can run the following command.

$ git branch -u origin/Master

The above command should set up a remote tracking branch for our Master branch. Now let's check if there is a remote tracking branch for the Master branch.

$ git branch -vv

The output is as follows:

Set up a remote tracker branch for the master branch

Our master branch now has a remote-tracking branch.

Summarize

We can run the command with -vv togit branch see which remote branch our local branch is tracking. We also covered how to add a remote-tracking branch to a local branch.
