Setting the (origin) remote repository URL in Git

Author:JIYIK Last Updated:2025/04/04 Views:

The best thing about git is that it allows us to manage our projects in a very efficient way. A remote repository can be connected to a local git repository using two methods: through HTTPsand through SSH.

Set the source URL (remote repository URL)

First, you can check if the current repository is associated with any remote repository using the following command.

git remote -v

If the repository exists and is used HTTPS, it will display the following result:

origin	https://github.com/user/repo-one (fetch)
origin	https://github.com/user/repo-one (push)

If the repository exists and is used SSH, it will display the following result:

origin	git@github.com:user/repo-one.git (fetch)
origin	git@github.com:user/repo-one.git (push)

If there is no remote repository connected to the repo, it will be blank.

You can remove the associated URL with the following command:

git remote remove origin

Now that you're sure the remote repository exists, you can set the origin URL to:

git remote set-url origin https://github.com/user/another-repo

Alternatively, if the remote repository URL does not exist, we can also use the following command:

git remote add origin https://github.com/user/another-repo

However, if you want to add another remote repository URL, the first git remote set-url origin https://github.com/user/some-other-repomethod with will replace the previous originURL. We can git remote addsolve this problem by using and adding another URL to the same repository.

example:

git remote add secondorigin https://github.com/user/another-repo
