Deleting local commits in Git
This article will discuss the steps to undo local commits. We will see how to remove a single commit to multiple commits in Git.
Deleting local commits in Git
We'll discuss how to delete the latest commit in your local repository to start.
We usually use git reset
command to remove the latest changes to our repository. If you want to remove the latest commit, use the following command.
git reset --hard HEAD~1
The argument HEAD~1
will delete a commit.
We can use N-th
the parameter as shown below.
git reset --hard HEAD~N
If you want to delete the last five commits in your repository, N
replace with your value.
We can remove a specific commit using the following command.
git reset --hard <sha1-commit-hash>
Use your equivalent of the above in the command.
If you want to undo changes made by commits between commit history, use git revert
the undo command. This command will undo changes made by the selected commits.
git revert <sha1-commit-hash>
However, git revert
submissions are not deleted. We use this in interactive forms git rebase
.
git rebase -i <sha1-commit-hash>
After running the command above, you will see an editor with a list of surrounding commits. You can type _ at the beginning drop
to remove the commit you want.
If you want to push your changes to the remote repository, run the following command.
git push --force-with-lease origin HEAD
The above command will not affect the changes made by other developers in the remote repository. git push origin HEAD --force
This is a safer option for the command, which will overwrite all changes made by other developers in the remote repository.
If you want to revert your local changes to the current state of the remote repository, run the following command.
git reset --hard origin/<branch_name>
You can git reflog
find deleted commits using the command.
