Undoing a Git pull

This tutorial demonstrates undoing a git pull to restore a git repository to a previous state using git hard reset.


Undoing a Git pull

To undo a git pull with a hard reset, we use git reset --hardthe command and specify HEAD.

Let us view the commits we have made on the git repository using the git repository command with the -p --onelineand -d --graphoptions as shown below.git log

git log

We have made three commits to the repository, the most recent being * bdb9fc2.

To undo the most recent commit using a hard reset, we use the --hard-unreset command with the -reset option git resetas shown below. HEAD^-unreset specifies to go back to the commit before HEAD.

git logThe output of the command shows that we have returned to the previous commit.

As shown in the figure below, we can also use HEAD~1to specify to return to HEADthe previous commit. HEAD~2It means to return to HEADthe two previous commits.
