Ignore Node_modules folder
While working on a project, there may be certain folders that you don't want git to track; these can be .env
files, node_modules
folders, etc.
These folders are intended for use only on the local computer and should not be shared with other computers. This may be because node_modules
the folders may vary in size from a few megabytes to several gigabytes.
While working, we certainly don't want to track node_modules
many changes to a folder. Therefore, we can use various methods to ignore the folder.
node_modules
Ignore folders
in the root folder
Let's take the following folder structure:
.
|
├── .gitignore
├── node_modules
└── src
└── index.html
Here, we need to set up our project so that we do not include folders tracked by git node_modules
, this can be .gitignore
done by creating a file. .gitignore
The files/folders mentioned in will not be tracked by git. So to ignore node_modules
, .gitignore
the contents inside the folder should be as follows:
node_modules
node_modules
Ignore all folders
that exist in the entire project
To demonstrate this, let's take the following project with the following folder structure:
.
├── backend
│ ├── index.html
│ └── node_modules
├── frontend
│ ├── index.html
│ └── node_modules
└── .gitignore
frontend
There are two folders in the and backend
folders and only one file in the project root. To ignore both folders, the contents of the folders must be:node_modules
.gitignore
node_modules
.gitignore
**/node_modules
Here, two consecutive asterisks **
followed by a slash /
are matched in all directories to match the folders within the frontend
and folders. Hence, this will make Git ignore both the and folders.backend
node_modules
node_modules
