Using patch files in Git
In this article, we will introduce Git patch files. This article covers the following topics.
We use Git patch files to store changes from commits. Patch files will contain data like commit date and message.
You can use Git patches to apply changes to your repository. These patch files come in handy when you don't have write access.
Creating a patch file from a commit in Git
We use git format-patch
the command to generate the patch file.
To create patch files for a specific number of commits before a selected commit, apply -N
the -patch option to your command.
git format-patch -N <sha1-commit-hash>
commit hash
The alternative is HEAD
.
git format-patch -N HEAD
To create a patch file for a specific range of commits, use the following command.
git format-patch <first-commit-hash>^..<end-commit-hash>
Add stdout>file.patch
to your command to create one file for multiple commits.
To view all changes in the patch file, run git apply --stat <file.patch>
the command.
git apply --stat <file.patch>
The command above specifies the patch file to read.
If you want to apply the patch to your repository, use the following command.
git apply <file.patch>
git format-patch
The command will store your commits in UNIX mailbox format. You can send and receive patch files via email.
When running git apply
the command to apply a patch, Git will ignore patch paths that do not exist in your repository's working directory.
